Episode 46 of The Penis Project will talk about nerve grafting for the penis for patients who have undergone radical prostatectomy – as a treatment to help with erectile dysfunction.
This episode will tackle what this new treatment is all about straight from Dr. Dangerfield himself and the results that have been documented over the 7 years it has been offered to patients.
PROCESS and CRITERIA: What are involved in nerve grafting?
- The patient must have been cured of prostate cancer through Radical Prostatectomy (RP). According to Dr. Dangerfield, there is not enough data as to whether nerve grafting works for patients who have undergone procedure other than RP to cure the cancer.
- Strong sex life before prostate cancer
- Helps to have a supportive partner
- Assessment will be done using the penile doppler ultrasound – to check blood flow. Ideally, patient must have strong blood flow to the region (strict criteria) \
How long do you need to stay in the hospital?
According to Dr. Dangerfield, just overnight. After procedure assessment will be done in a week to ensure complete recovery.
What is the average response rate after the procedure?
According to Dr. Dangerfield, at around a year (between nine to 12 months). The initial indicators for a positive response being: nocturnal erections begin, become more regular or return.
What is the cost of the nerve grafting procedure?
Dr. Dangerfield estimates it to be cheaper than the cost of radical prostatectomy – rebateable but there will be a few out of pockets.
