The Anatomy of the Penis

Penis Names

During school health class, we learnt the names of our genitalia: penis, vagina, testicle, ovary… Mostly we cringed or chuckled at the diagrams, and some even hoped the earth would open up and swallow us. Usually, we were given the basics. Enough for us to know what is what, but not enough to understand our bodies. Over the years we learn the slang and these words become much easier to say and recognise than the ‘proper’ names. There are over 400 slang terms for penis alone!

Unfortunately, we don’t realise how much we DON’T know about our bodies until something happens and we suddenly find ourselves talking to specialists who use words that we have never heard of – but they expect us to know what they are talking about. In this article, I am going to explain those words that you might hear and, hopefully by the end of it, you will be able to understand what the specialists are saying.

Firstly, let’s look at the basic hardware. There is the penis, and below that are the testicles (balls) in the scrotum (sac). Now let’s look at the penis itself. The main part of the penis is called the shaft. At the end of the shaft is the glans which is often called the head. The eye is the hole at the tip of the head. The corona is the base of the head. The frenulum is the V-shaped band of skin located on the underside of the head and is the most sensitive part of the penis.

What we Do

Secondly, let’s look at the size of a penis.

Length – the length is the measurement of the penis from the base to the tip. To measure the length of your penis, place the measuring tape or ruler at the point where the penis attaches to your body. Press it into your body slightly until you feel the resistance of the pubic bone. Measure from the base of your penis to the end of the tip.

Girth – the girth is the circumference of the penis, or in other words, how thick it is. To measure the girth, find the fattest part of your erect penis. Place a soft measuring tape gently around the shaft and note where the tape meets.

Most importantly size does not matter but if you are curious about the averages for your country check the world map of average penis size (link below).
